Hey Gang,
I have come across a problem when testing for strict invariance. My model has 5 factors and 57 items. Testing for invariance of the configural model and the weak invariance model is considered good through inspection of X2 and CFI change. The same is true when comparing the weak invariance and strong invariance models. In all models my X2 and degrees of freedom are moving in the right directions. However, when I constrain my 57 residual variances all of the sudden my model X2 drops from approximately 16000 to 15000 and the CFI increases from 0.937 to 0.943. I am not sure why this is happening. Can anyone please shed some light on what might be going on? If you need more information regarding the model I can gladly provide that. Thanks in advance. JB

Sorry everyone, but its a multigroup analysis between two groups in which the sample was randomly split to create the two groups. I am working to cross-validate the initial model. I have 7580 participants and the data are considered continuous. Hope that helps. JB

A more restrictive model will give a higher chi-square. If you want an explanation, send the two outputs and your license number to support@statmodel.com.

Hi Dr. Muthen,
Thank you for responding. I will send the output for the strong and strict invariance models as you suggested.

Indeed I have been experiencing higher chi-squares with each more restrictive model until I constrained the additional 57 residual variances at which time the ch-square went down.

Thanks in advance for your assistance. JB
