What happens when the level 2 residual variances are requested for a 1-1-1 MSEM path model? I have noticed that this adds parameters to my model but am unsure otherwise.

You typically would want to include them in the model, although they are often close to zero.

The problem I have when requesting residuals for x-vars is that it appears my x-vars then get treated as y-vars.

Residual variances refer to dependent variables, including factor indicators, so they don't appear for x variables. So the premise for your question is unclear.

I had been working from some 1-1-1 MSEM syntax that requested residuals for x,m,&y variables. It didn't make sense to request an x variable, because it has no residual variance. That must be why Mplus is changing them to y variables. It looks like I should be able to leave that part of the syntax out. It also appears that Mplus estimates residuals for the m & y variables by default anyway, so they should be able to be left out.
