I am very happy to see that Mplus 4 is coming close. Mplus is a very powerful software and unique in many ways. Here are something I think will make Mplus even better (all of them are somewhat related to categorical data analysis).

1) Make it easy (easier) to handle three- or higher level modeling.
2) Add complementary log-log link.
3) Make poisson model able to handle offset or exposure.
4) Add a special modeling command for Markov transition modeling similar to the one for growth modeling in version 3.

Some of them are relatively easy and some of them may be a long-shot. I hope someday I only need two software for statistical analysis: Stata for data manipulation and routine analysis and Mplus for the rest (SEM, multilevel modeling, growth modeling, hazard model, etc.) :)

Thanks for your kind words and good suggestions. We are interested in them all; funny that you should mention 4) since that recently came up in our discussions. We will add these suggestions to our (long) list and also encourage others to make suggestions.

Here are two more wishes:

5) Add cross-classfication random effect in two-level models;
6) Make Mplus cross-platform, especially on Linux/Unix platform. As a serious numerical computation platform, Linux/Unix is still ahead of Windows, especially when dealing with large amount of data. Mplus probably can run under Wine, but it will be nice to have a natively compiled and officially supported version under these platform. This can begin with a command line only version and do not need to involve GUI programming, which is usually the most time-consuming part to port a Windows application to Linux/Unix.

We have those on our list.

Hi,

I am trying to install Mplus in Linux (Fedora 7 with Wine). However, it did not work. I suspect that some specific Windows libraries are required by Mplus.

Could you give me some hints?

Thanks!

Mike

We know of no specific Windows libraries that are required by Mplus.

I hate to bring back from the dead an old topic, but since the release of 6.12 for Linux, are there any instructions or information that anyone is aware of for using one of these versions on a Linux distro (e.g., Ubuntu 11.10)? Furthermore, is there any reading that could point me in the direction of using Mplus within the terminal window.

I am trying to help my wife run 6.12 on her Ubuntu 11.10 machine and I have gotten as far as installing the program and opening from the terminal but once it asks for "give name of input file" (which I do) "give name of output file" it won't open or save any .inp or .out files.

I have Mplus 6.11 on my windows machine so this is my first time trying to get Mplus on a linux distro.

Please help, I finally convinced her to switch over to Mplus and now we can't get it running on Linux for her.

There is a Mac tutorial at the following link. It is also applicable to Linux.

Thank you Dr. Muthen, works like a charm and it was so easy. My mistake was actually not writing in the terminal as this; mplus syntax.inp

I did notice that Mplus 6.12 runs much faster in Linux than my windows (although I have 6.11 installed) with comparable notebooks. I wonder if anyone has seen this difference.

We have seen that it is faster on the Mac. This may also be true.
