Dear Dr. Muthen,

I am doing measurement invariance testing for several scales between 2 sub-groups in order to do simultaneous 2-group SEM.

Several scales have over 10 items and Chisq tests between unconstrained and constrained show they have measurement non-invariance, but Chisq differences were small.

Now my goal is "to explore which items need to be freed to make the comparison between the unconstrained and partially constrained models to achieve "non-significance".

I am new to Mplus, could you guide me on:

1. What does "free" some item mean?

2. How to "free" some items within one scale, using what Mplus syntax? Any detailed example on the User Guide?

**Current CFA syntax********************
GROUPING IS SexOri (2=gay 3=bisexual);
useobservations are CESD1 - CESD20

MODEL:
Depression by CESD1 - CESD20;
Depression@1;
Model gay:
Depression by CESD1 - CESD20;
Output: stdyx;

3. What are the criteria to free specific item over the others? Or to "free" multiple rather than one?

Thank you so much for your help!
