Dear professors,

I was reading the Mplus UG (version 8) and in pp.681 it stated:

"For the bi-factor rotations, BI-GEOMIN and BI-CF-QUARTIMAX, a general factor is allowed in combination with specific factors. In the oblique rotation, the specific factors are correlated with the general factor and are correlated with each other. In the orthogonal rotation, the specific factors are uncorrelated with the general factor and are uncorrelated with each other."

In reality, however, when using bi-geomin oblique rotation, the general factor is uncorrelated with specific facter, while the specific factors are correlated with each other. I was wondering if I was reading the above sentence wrong?

Typically, the specific factors come out uncorrelated with the general factor in BI-EFA. But it can happen that they are correlated as seen in the 2012 Jennrich-Bentler article in Psychometrica discussing the oblique BI-EFA case (sse PHi on page 450).
