I created a table to demonstrate the correlations between all the items of the same construct. At level 1, the inter-item correlations ranged from 0.15 to .43. At level 2, the inter-item correlations ranged from 0.77 to 0.89. According to the literature, the ideal range of average inter-item correlation is 0.15 to 0.50. My level-2 correlations were far out of the range. However,the Cronbach alpha at level 2 was 0.99, much higher than that at level 1 (0.73). I wonder if there is any particular rule of thumb for inter-item correlations in the multilevel context. |

I doubt that there is a rule of thumb for this - but you can check on SEMNET. |
