Hello,
I'm having some trouble understanding what the difference is (both conceptually and statistically) between LCA and tetrachoric factor analysis. Are they essentially the same? What are the merits and/or disadvantages for taking one approach as opposed to another?

You may find the following paper which is available on the website helpful:

Muthén, B. & Muthén, L. (2000). Integrating person-centered and variable-centered analyses: Growth mixture modeling with latent trajectory classes. Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, 24, 882-891.
