Piecewise GMM vs General GMM |

Hi, I'm looking to understand what the key (technical & conceptual) differences are between the piecewise GMM and the general GMM. From my reading, I have gathered that the piecewise GMM permits the researcher to estimate the unknown number of latent classes with individually varying timepoints of transition compared to the general GMM which estimates latent classes from development phase to the next development phase. This said, I'm still not clear on why anyone would use the general GMM, when it seems like the piecewise GMM offers increased accuracy in estimating and establishing functional forms. |

Piecewise modeling is less parsimonious, might make the interpretation of the growth factors less clear, and may get a worse BIC. |
