I'm running a gmm with a distal effect model. Everytime that I run my model, I get a warning message that the distal outcome is not correlated with any variables within the classes. However, I haven't specified the outcome as categorical. Do all distal outcomes have to specified as categorical?

Distal outcomes do not have to be categorical. This warning can be ignored.
