I'm sure this is a straight forward answer, but I seem to be missing something.

I know that for latent factors, estimated means will be zero.

When assessing the measurement model for my analyses, this is in fact the case (i.e. estimated means for the latent factors equal zero).

However, for my structural model (in which a latent factor mediates the relationship between two observed variables) the estimated mean for the latent factor is not zero.

Any thoughts why this is so? Thanks in advance!

When the factor is a mediator it is a function of background variables and its mean is therefore a function of the means of the background variables.
