Hi There, I was wondering if there is a way to save the residuals for a within-person model and then use them in a subsequent between level model. So I am hoping to save the residuals for %WITHIN% X on YZ and then predict it in a model like this: %WITHIN% X_resid; %BETWEEN% X_resid ON A B C D; Is this possible? If not is there any way to control for the within person relations between a DV and and a couple IVs whilst predicting that DV with different IVs at the between level? Thank you |

I don't think you want to work with residuals - model it instead. Why not say %Within% X on YZ; %Between% X on A B C D; where the between-level X is the random intercept in the regression of X on YZ. |

Thank you for your reply. So the within and between models are not independent of one another? Does this mean in any model where you use the same DV at the within and between level, the between DV will be the residual of the original DV with the variance it shares with the within predictors removed? |

Q1: No Q2: X on the between level is not a residual, but I would not focus on residuals. You may want to ask this question on Multilevelnet. |
