Residual Variances in Multi-level CFA |

I am trying to run a multi-level factor analysis with categorical items in which all residual variances are constrained to be equal at the Within level and are constrained to be zero at the Between level. Mplus is not letting me estimate the residual variances for the items at the within level. I get an error saying "Variances for categorical outcomes are not allowed on the within level." I reran them model without these item-level residual variances in there. The results do not show any residual variances for the items at the Within level, so is it safe to say these are equal in the sense that they are non-existent? |

With categorical variables, variances are not model estimated parameters except with WLSMV and the Theta parametrization when there are multiple groups or multiple time points. |
