Hi,

I am just trying to get my variables into Mplus and make sure everything looks right before I attempt my CFA. I'm confused by an error message that I am getting.

My input looks like this:

Title:
Here goes nothing;

Data:
File is "Z:\dissertation_data_7-31-1.dat";
Format is free;

Variable:
Names are OBCSS1 OBCSS2 OBCSS3 OBCSS4 OBCSS5 OBCSS6 OBCSS7 OBSCSS8 (etc, etc);

Usevariables are OBCSS1 OBCSS2 OBCSS3 OBCSS4 OBCSS5 OBCSS6 OBCSS7 OBSCSS8 (etc, etc) ;

Missing are all (9999);

Analysis:
Type = basic;

Unfortunately, when I run this, I receive an error that is referencing a variable that I am not using, and have not identified in the above input command. All of the above variables are numeric variables, but my error is in reference to a string variable (race/ethnicity) which is not included in the above mentioned variables. It seems that Mplus is trying to analyze different variables than the ones I am choosing. Any thoughts about why this might be?

The error message says:

*** ERROR
Invalid symbol in data file:
"Asian" at record #: 30, field #: 6

It sounds like you have characters in your data set. Search the data set for Asian. Please send the output, data, and your license number to support@statmodel.com if you can't figure this out..
