because it is not entirely clear in your M+ User's Guide:

when a categorical (ordinal) variable is included as an exogenous/observed variable in the structural model, it is unecessary to write a command specifying that the variable is categorical? The only time it is necessary to specify that a variable is categorical is when it is a dependent variable?

For example, F2 ON Y15;
F2 being the outcome variable and Y15 being participation in sports (yes/no, categ. var). M+ does not require that I indicate that Y15 IS categorical?

I appreciate your help in this matter.

See the CATEGORICAL option in the user's guide. The first sentence says this option is for dependent variables.
